410 Medical’s LifeFlow Device Wins Healthcare Fans, Investment
A hand-held fluid resuscitation device developed by Durham start-up 410 Medical has been generating major buzz and billings for its unique design and potential to improve patient care.
The North Carolina State University spinout company’s LifeFlow emergency medical device was named a showcase product at the 2019 Premier Innovation Celebration. Subsequently Premier, a leading Charlotte-based healthcare improvement company and one of the top purchasers in the country, awarded an Emergency Medicine Product contract to 410 Medical for the device.
In late 2019, 410 Medical also closed an $8 million Series A financing round with participation from Durham’s Hatteras Venture Partners and the venture arm of OSF HealthCare, a Peoria, Illinois-based health system. In addition to the funding, OSF Ventures added Stan Lynall, vice president of venture investments at OSF Ventures, to the 410 board of directors. Hatteras added Partner Jeff Terrell.
Premier’s network of 4,000 U.S. hospitals and 175,000 other providers broadened 410 Medical’s outreach with the group purchasing agreement. In exchange, Premier members have access to pre-negotiated LifeFlow pricing. Since the launch, the medical device is accessible to 35 EMS and hospital systems country-wide.
LifeFlow is a hand-operated infuser that combines a syringe, automatic check valve and high-flow tubing set. It was designed by physician Mark Piehl at WakeMed Health & Hospitals in Raleigh to help a single caregiver inject resuscitating fluids quickly and easily with less stress in emergency situations. The company says LifeFlow lowers risk of organ failure due to its ability to deliver fluids more efficiently.
The device, is manufactured in-state by Robling Medical of Youngsville, was cleared by the FDA for human use in 2016, and commercialized in 2017. Premier awarded it showcase product status due to its distinct and prospective ability to improve patient treatment.
