Alcami expands CDMO capabilities with acquisition of packaging company

Alcami Corporation, a contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) headquartered in Wilmington, North Carolina, has acquired Tjoapack, a global contract packaging organization.

“Alcami’s acquisition of Tjoapack significantly expands its ability to support biotech and pharmaceutical clients in North Carolina by adding packaging capacity, strengthening supply chain resilience and bringing previously outsourced services into its network,” said Timothy R. Compton, chief strategy officer of Alcami. Tjoapack-Alcami

Alcami has 45 years of experience in advancing pharmaceuticals and biologics from development to delivery by providing fully integrated lab services, drug product manufacturing, cGMP pharma storage and support services.

Supporting customers globally

For more than 35 years, Tjoapack has supplied contract primary and secondary packaging and labeling services, including oral solid dose (blister and bottles), sterile injectables (vials, pre-filled syringes and auto-injectors) and kitting. The company operates from facilities in Clinton, Tenn., and Etten-Leur, The Netherlands.

"This transaction represents an important next chapter for Tjoapack. Partnering with Alcami allows us to accelerate our growth ambitions while staying true to what has made Tjoapack successful — quality, reliability and a strong focus on our customers," said Dexter Tjoa, CEO of Tjoapack. "Together, we create a more integrated transatlantic platform that enables us to support our partners more effectively as they scale and expand globally."

Tjoapack clients will gain access to Alcami's comprehensive services, including pharmaceutical testing labs, sterile and oral solid dose drug product manufacturing and GMP pharma storage, ensuring medicines are delivered worldwide with minimal supplier hand-offs.

“Operationally, this acquisition enables a more coordinated and flexible supply chain,” said Compton. “Packaging at Tjoapack’s Tennessee facility is complemented by GMP storage in Garner, N.C., and additional packaging and labelling capabilities in Wilmington, providing redundancy and reducing single‑site dependency. The deal also internalizes analytical and testing services that Tjoapack historically outsourced.”

Earlier this year, Alcami acquired a 37,000-square-foot facility at 4620 Creekstone Drive in Durham, NC. The two-story facility will serve as a hub for the company’s growing analytical and development capabilities.

According to the company, the expansion, which is expected to be completed in 2026, will significantly increase its capacity for method development, validation and testing across biologics, peptides, oligonucleotides, antibody-drug conjugates and cell and gene therapies. The site is equipped with state-of-the-art bioseparation, mass spectrometry, electrophoresis and bioassay technologies for deep characterization of complex drug substances and drug products.

“Through Alcami’s laboratory network in Morrisville, Durham, Wilmington and St. Louis, clients gain integrated release testing, stability programs, and analytical development within a unified platform, improving quality oversight and operational efficiency,” said Compton. “These expanded capabilities reinforce North Carolina’s position as a leading life sciences hub by increasing access to advanced, coordinated development and manufacturing services for both emerging biotech and established pharmaceutical companies.”

The Durham site is fully integrated into Alcami’s broader laboratory, manufacturing and storage network, aligning activities with drug product manufacturing and supply chain requirements. Compton says that this integration improves program efficiency, reduces timelines and ensures consistent quality and regulatory compliance across all development stages.

Meeting tomorrow’s drug development needs

Looking ahead, Alcami remains committed to expanding its capacity and capabilities to support the evolving needs of the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries while providing companies access to a broader range of services through a single provider.

“As the industry shifts toward biologics, cell and gene therapies, and other advanced treatments, demand for specialized analytics, flexible manufacturing and integrated supply chain solutions will continue to grow,” said Compton. “Alcami’s ongoing expansion of laboratory services, drug product manufacturing, packaging and storage positions the company to meet these demands through continued investment in facilities, technologies and talent.”
