The North Carolina Biotechnology Center awarded 14 grants and loans totaling $1,287,335 to bioscience companies, universities and non-profit organizations in the first quarter of its fiscal year.

The awards, made in July, August and September, will support life science research, technology commercialization and entrepreneurship throughout North Carolina. The funding will also help companies attract follow-on funding from other sources.

U.S. Biopharma Workforce Partnership Conference

The U.S. Biopharma Workforce Partnership Conference focuses on strengthening talent acquisition efforts by enhancing industry partnerships with academic and non-profit organizations focused on life sciences workforce development.  

The event, a first for the biopharmaceutical industry, will connect industry hiring managers and talent acquisition professionals with biopharmaceutical manufacturing-focused universities, community colleges, non-degree skill-based pathway providers, and national workforce intermediaries.

Charles E. Hamner, Jr., Ph.D., a former president and CEO of the North Carolina Biotechnology Center and a longtime advocate for life sciences in the state, has received the 2024 High Flyer Champion of Innovation from the First Flight Venture Center.

Hamner received the award at First Flight’s annual High Flyer Awards Luncheon on Friday, Nov. 1, at Prestonwood Country Club in Cary. The annual event brings together entrepreneurs, industry leaders and innovators to honor excellence in the North Carolina ecosystem.
