Have you been thinking about changing careers? Are you interested in learning more about the state’s growing biomanufacturing field? If the answer is yes, mark your calendar for Thursday, February 17 when the North Carolina Biotechnology Center will host BPD’s BioGrow: Training and Education Across North Carolina, sponsored by Kymanox.

This in-person event will bring together anyone interested in learning more about a career in biopharma manufacturing with representatives from the state’s training programs and biopharma companies and will also feature students who have transitioned from training to a career in life sciences.

“Anyone who is interested in biopharma will learn more about available training programs and careers,” said Katie Stember, Ph.D., director of life science economic development at NCBiotech. “We want people to know that you don't have to have a graduate degree to get a great job in the life sciences. The event is open to everyone, and we encourage students and job seekers to join us.”

The event comes as the demand for employees trained in biomanufacturing continues to grow. A panel with representatives from FUJIFILM Diosynth Technologies, Thermo Fisher Scientific and Merck will discuss their industry’s needs and what their companies are looking for in potential employees. A panel of students will discuss their experiences in the state’s many training programs and what their careers are like now.

“North Carolina is a leader in biologics manufacturing, and the number of companies doing this work and jobs at these companies are growing rapidly in our state,” Stember added. “Companies need talented individuals from all walks of life and all educational backgrounds to help make their lifesaving medications. Awareness of both available training programs and available jobs is very important to make sure we are reaching new populations of people who are very well-suited for these jobs but may not know about them.”

Community college and university training programs at the event will include Alamance Community College, North Carolina State University’s BTEC, North Carolina Central University’s BRITE, BioNetwork, Central Carolina Community College, Durham Technical Community College, Forsyth Technical Community College, Johnston Community College and Vance Granville Community College.

This event is one example of how the state is forming public/private partnerships to benefit the North Carolina economy. It helped NCBiotech and a statewide coalition of public and private partner organizations and institutions receive a federal Build Back Better Regional Challenge award in December. They submitted a wide-ranging proposal entitled “Accelerating Life Science Manufacturing to Create Economic Resilience and Promote Equity in Distressed North Carolina Communities.” The $500,000 Phase 1 award is helping academia, industry, state and local government, and other partners to work together to develop strategies that can expand, connect, scale, and promote the state’s life sciences manufacturing cluster.
