BTEC Seminar: Utilizing Oxygen Transfer Rate as a Core Parameter for Shaken Bioprocess Monitoring & Optimization

Shaken bioprocesses rely heavily on the oxygen transfer rate (OTR) as an indirect measure of the oxygen uptake rate (OUR) to infer a cultivation's metabolic activity. However, accurately capturing this parameter online has historically been challenging in a shaken vessel.

This presentation reviews OTR as a critical bioprocess parameter — covering its fundamental definition and how the Kuhner TOM system enables real-time tracking. Finally, we will explore practical application examples, demonstrating how utilizing OTR data directly optimizes shaken bioprocess workflows.
