KeraNetics has made a name for itself during the past four years with a string of high-profile grants and contracts, including several with the Department of the Defense.

Advanced Liquid Logic  is a company to watch.

That was reinforced this week when the fast-growing Research Triangle Park firm was named one of 25 North Carolina Companies to Watch from more than 200 nominees in the third annual competition sponsored by Durham-based entrepreneurial support organization CED.

The biofuels industry has potential solutions for some of society’s biggest problems, including high gas prices and sustainable energy.

But being a new industry has its challenges, particularly since biofuels are based on new and evolving technologies. Farmers and companies looking to take a product from idea to commercialization may find this to be a difficult process, since few have gone before them.

Regulatory hurdles faced by life-science start-ups are far higher than wider than those faced by information technology entrepreneurs, but survival money is the same beautiful green in both worlds.

That message came through loud and clear last week when the newly opened Wake Forest Biotech Place in Winston-Salem hosted an event to celebrate the city’s growing innovation community.

The North Carolina Biotechnology Center is joining three of the Triangle’s major research universities basking in the glow of scientific achievement bestowed upon two more local research scientists.

On Friday, North Carolina Central University announced a grant of $1.5 million from the North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline Foundation.

The grant will be used for math and science student scholarships and to enhance the university’s STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) programs.

On Tuesday, AAIPharma services opened its new Technology Center in Wilmington, near the company’s headquarters.

The new 40,000 square foot facility is part of a $15 million capital expansion program.

 

Senator Kay Hagan has earned praise for her work to get new potentially life-saving drugs to patients faster.

The Biotechnology Industry Organization gave Hagan one of its Legislator of the Year awards on Wednesday in Washington D.C.

If you’ve been to Asheville in recent years, you’ve noticed there’s something brewing in the mountains of North Carolina.

Tom Pike won’t have far to go when he starts his new job April 30 replacing Dennis Gillings as CEO of global CRO leader Quintiles.

Pike, who has spent the past two years helping start-up companies after 22 years at Raleigh-based Accenture, was chosen to succeed Quintiles founder Gillings because of his “impressive track record of helping customers navigate fast-changing environments and solving complex business issues,” Gillings said in an announcement today.
