North Carolina community colleges and biopharmaceutical manufacturing companies are collaborating to provide full financial support for 220 students pursuing the BioWork program as a pre-apprenticeship. After completing BioWork, students will complete an apprenticeship with one of the participating companies in the North Carolina Life Sciences Apprenticeship Consortium.

Preparing for Employment

The North Carolina Community College system offers a certificate program that equips students with foundational skills for entry-level jobs in biopharma manufacturing. The BioWork certificate program is offered at 12 local community colleges with in-person, hybrid, and online learning options. The time to complete the BioWork training ranges from six weeks to 3.5 months.

From 2023-2024, BioWork is being offered for free due to federal funding from the U.S. Economic Development Agency’s Build Back Better Regional Challenge. 

Pre-apprenticeship Career Pathway 

The Pre-appenticeship Program is a formal pathway to employment in biopharma manufacturing. The three phases involve the BioWork training, an apprenticeship,  and employment.
