Two North Carolina-based executives are among the 100 most inspiring leaders in the nation’s pharmaceutical industry, according to the life sciences magazine PharmaVoice.

Peyton Howell of Paraxel International in Durham and Dave Oury of Medical Leverage in Cary were named to PharmaVoice 100, an annual list that recognizes inspirational and innovative individuals who are making positive contributions to the life sciences.

Categories include commanders and chiefs; entrepreneurs; change agents; diversity, equity and inclusion champions; clinical experts; patient heroes; creative; mentors; and regulators. Co-workers and industry peers nominate recipients for the honor.

Howell, who is president of commercial and consulting, and chief commercial and strategy officer, for Parexel, was named to the commanders and chiefs list. She also was named to the PharmaVoice 100 list in 2019.

Howell joined Parexel in May 2018 and leads the company’s Commercial and Consulting businesses along with its Corporate Business Development, Corporate Strategy, Marketing and Corporate Communications functions. In 2020, she led the company’s Biotech and Enterprise Commercial teams to record new business growth.

Howell has more than 25 years of leadership experience in the healthcare industry, and prior to joining Parexel she held several leadership positions with AmerisourceBergen, a Fortune 20 company, and also was a founder of Lash Group, growing the company from an early innovator of patient access services to nearly 5,000 employees and serving as president for nearly 10 years following its acquisition by AmerisourceBergen.

Oury, who is the founder and president of Medical Leverage, a medical communications company that serves the healthcare industry, was named to the entrepreneurs list.

After 20 years as a senior marketing director for a major pharmaceutical company, Oury founded Medical Leverage in 2001 in response to a perceived need for an education liaison between life sciences companies and healthcare providers. He has since grown the company to about 30 full-time employees from the original three.

Medical Leverage helps pharmaceutical, biotech, biopharmaceutical, medical device, and medical diagnostic clients around the world with communications, promotions and training. The company has worked with more than 100 clients, helping them launch over 75 new products with brand revenue exceeding $50 billion.

"The genesis of the PharmaVoice 100 was to showcase people – people who inspire change, people who inspire others to stretch and reach their goals, people who are committed to making the world a healthier place," said Taren Grom, editor and co-founder of PharmaVoice. “Each year, our community puts thoughtful consideration into distinguishing the individuals who are leading the charge in terms of inspired leadership, creativity, breakthrough science, corporate excellence, patient advocacy, mentorship and sponsorship, DE&I, technology development, and so on -- in short the individuals who are driving change and redefining the landscape of the life-sciences ecosystem."

PharmaVoice, based in Titusville, N.J., delivers the views, opinions, and insights of executives who are shaping the life-sciences industry. The publication reaches over 43,000 subscribers and is distributed digitally to 60,000 industry executives.
