Metrics Contract Services, a full-service global contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) based in Greenville, has expanded its facilities for producing oral, solid-dose drugs.

The expansion adds 3,760 square feet of production space and new equipment at Metrics, a division of Mayne Pharma.

The facilities contain three new manufacturing suites including a combination dispensing/flex room, a flex room and a dedicated suite to house a newly commissioned Fette FE55 contained tablet press with bilayer capability. All three suites feature separate personnel and equipment airlocks for compliant one-way flow to prevent contamination; stainless steel doors and finishes; epoxy paint and floor finishes; low wall HEPA filter exhausts with bag in/bag out design; and fogging showers.

“The new commercial production suites will accommodate our customers’ demand for increased flexibility and capacity,” said John Ross, president of Mayne Pharma U.S and Metrics Contract Services. “This trio of rooms will enable us to further tailor equipment trains to the applicable process, particularly those that require smaller batch sizes. Our clients will see immediate benefits through greater flexibility and improved potent handling.”

The expansion concludes a $10 million investment that followed an $80 million expansion of Mayne Pharma’s Greenville campus completed in 2018.

“We are so fortunate to have Metrics Contract Services, a world-class contract and development manufacturing operation,” said Mark Phillips, vice president of statewide operations and executive director of the Eastern Office of the North Carolina Biotechnology Center.  “They continue to expand their Greenville operations to offer capabilities and a portfolio of service needed to meet customer demands.”

Metrics supports drug development from initial concept to global commercialization. It provides formulation development, analytical testing, and commercial manufacturing to more than 100 customers worldwide.

The company specializes in smaller batches, ideal for orphan drug development and niche patient populations.

Metrics was founded as a contract analytical laboratory in 1994 by Phil Hodges, a scientist at the pharmaceutical company Burroughs Wellcome in Research Triangle Park, and East Carolina University professor John Bray. The company was acquired by Mayne Pharma in 2012.

Mayne Pharma is a specialty pharmaceutical company focused on commercializing branded and generic pharmaceuticals and providing contract development and manufacturing services to clients worldwide. The publicly owned company is headquartered in Salisbury, South Australia, a state in south-central Australia.

Mayne Pharma’s Greenville campus encompasses 126,000 square feet of manufacturing space on 36 acres. The company also has a commercial office in Raleigh.
