Measles and the Ethics of Vaccination

This lecture will examine the historical background to mandatory immunization policies, anti-vaccinationism and the 2019 resurgence of measles. The lecture will be followed by case discussion of how this history might inform responding to parents hesitant to immunize their children.

Physicians, Nurses, Clergy, Social Workers, Mental Health, any interested healthcare professional. Objectives

Upon completion of this knowledge-based program, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the role played by measles vaccine in US immunization policy
  • Explain the social forces that led to backlash against vaccination and resurgence of measles in 2019
  • Discuss how history might inform how to speak with parents skeptical about vaccines

There is no fee for this activity, however, seating is limited and preregistration is highly encouraged. You are welcome to bring your own lunch. 1.0 Contact Hour from Northwest AHEC Nurses: This educational activity (1.0 contact hour) can be applied toward your continuing competence plan for maintaining your current licensure with the North Carolina Board of Nursing. This program does not provide specific NBCC Credits. However, per LPC licensure guidelines, you may submit up to 15 contact hours of continuing education by attending programs by affiliates of the National Area Health Education Center
