Animal Health and Nutrition Virtual Forum “Diagnostics: Early Detection of Cancer”

Papillomavirus infections, squamous cell carcinoma, genomics, genome mapping and the comparative aspects of canine cancer will be discussed in the light of developing new molecular assays for diagnostic and prognostic use in veterinary medicine.

Agenda

Jennifer Luff, VMD, PhD

Dr. Jennifer Luff joined the Department of Population Health and Pathobiology, at the College of Veterinary Medicine, North Carolina State University, as an Assistant Professor of Pathology in January 2014. Dr. Luff completed her undergraduate education in Animal Science at Cornell University and received her VMD from University of Pennsylvania.  She did her residency training in Anatomic Pathology at University of California, Davis, achieved board certification in Anatomic Pathology, and completed her PhD at UC Davis under Dr. Peter Moore. Dr. Luff’s research program focuses on virally driven cancers in animals, with particular interest in papillomavirus infections and squamous cell carcinoma. One of her current research projects is focused on viral immunity and the interferon response in the skin, with particular interest in papillomavirus infections.

Matthew Breen, PhD, C. Biol, FRSB

Dr. Breen is a Professor of Genomics and the Oscar J. Fletcher Distinguished Professor of Comparative Oncology Genetics in the Dept. of Molecular Biomedical Sciences at the NCSU College of Veterinary Medicine. He is also a member of the NCSU Comparative Medicine Institute (CMI), the Center for Human Health for the Environment (CHHE), the NCSU Genetics Program in the College of Science, and the Cancer Genetics Program at the University of North Carolina's Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. Dr. Breen was a charter member, and now serves on the Board of Directors, of the Canine Comparative Oncology and Genomics Consortium (CCOGC), a 501c3 not-for-profit organization established to promote the role of the dog in comparative biomedical research. He is also a charter member of the Sea Lion Cancer Consortium (SLiCC).  He founded Sentinel Biomedical in 2015, a company focused on diagnosing urinary bladder cancer in dogs.
