Sources for Life Science Images

Need some ideas of where to look for life science images? Consider the following list as a starting point for image acquisition.

These sources are provided as a courtesy. NCBiotech does not specifically endorse any company, organization or stock house and accepts no liability for any of the sources listed below. This list is not inclusive, nor can we guarantee all information is current. (updated November 20, 2017)

 

North Carolina

Life Science/Agriculture

  • https://www.ars.usda.gov/oc/images/image-gallery/
    • An image gallery by the US Department of Agriculture, featuring Agricultural and Life Science images. All images are public domain and copyright-free unless otherwise noted. You must complete a form specifying your intention of use for the image when downloading it.
  • lib.berkeley.edu/BIOS/image.html
    • A directory of Life Science and Interdisciplinary image collections with rules governing their use that vary per site. Includes a section on image search engines that would best be avoided due to unclear copyright issues.
  • bugwood.org
    • The website for the University of Georgia’s Center for Invasive Species and Ecosystem Health. Has a section listing image databases. Each one requires registration in order to download the images and is subject to copyright under a Creative Commons license. Most images appear to be free to use for educational or non-commercial purposes.
  • forestryimages.org
    • Part of the bugwood network. A site that provides images free for educational or non-commercial use under a Creative Commons license. More specific guidelines on image usage are provided hereRegister here to use the images in the gallery.
  • plantmanagementnetwork.org/images
    • A membership site called Plant Management Network that appears to have a photo database for subscribers. All images may be freely viewed, printed, and accessed for personal or educational use but not commercial purposes. Use of the image may also be subject to further copyright.
  • genome.gov/dmd
    • A searchable database of photographs, graphics, and video files related to Genomic Science. All the images are free to use with proper credit to the producer of the image unless it is otherwise noted. More information on image usage can be found here.
  • lib.umn.edu/libdata/page.phtml?page_id=3125
    • A directory of image collections from the University of Minnesota Libraries. Has a robust section of galleries on Agricultural, Biological, and Environmental Sciences. The images in each separate gallery are subject to their own separate usage policies, but generally seem to be free for non-profit and educational use.
  • sciencephoto.com
    • Has rights-managed and royalty free images from all the sciences. Must have an account in order to download and license any photo. All images are priced.
  • sciencepicturecompany.com
    • Must have a membership in order to purchase photo rights. 3D art that features in science publication journals.
  • images.nigms.nih.gov
    • The image gallery of the National Institute for General medical Sciences. “This is a searchable database of photos, illustrations and videos. Permission is granted to use these images for educational, news media or research purposes, provided the source for each image is credited. The material in this database may not be used to promote or endorse commercial products or services.”
  • gallery.kightleys.com
    • 3D science illustrations available as stock images. Can purchase rights-managed images with negotiable price based on need. Operates out of Australia. Can also produce images upon request.
  • sciencesource.com
    • A collection of photographs and illustration specializing in healthcare, biomedical, technology, physical sciences and the natural sciences. Must call 1-800-833-9033 for details on licensing photos. For more details, go here: http://sciencesource.com/about_us/licensing.html
  • ics.ifas.ufl.edu/pictures
    • A database of agricultural and life science photos by the IFAS division of the University of Florida. Stock photos can be accessed by selecting “Stock (Photos w/o IFAS Personnel) from “Select a database to search” and entering your search term into the keyword search box. Must email tylerljones@ufl.edu to request a high-resolution version of a stock photo.

Interdisciplinary/General Stock Galleries

Public Domain

  • publicdomainpictures.net
    • A collection of public domain images, free to use without a license as long as the image is credited. Some images do need a license for commercial use. This will be noted below the image in the “license” section.
  • pdimages.com/pdlist.htm
    • A list of websites that specialize in public-domain images. Most are free for use; some come with restrictions. Includes information about image usage under each link.

Rights-Managed and Royalty Free

  • gettyimages.com
    • A stock photography collection with a searchable database. Contains royalty free, rights-managed, and editorial images. Licensing fees vary depending on use. Must register in order to download and/or license images.
  • fotosearch.com
    • A rights-managed and royalty free stock photography website. Must register here in order to download and/or license images. Fees vary depending on usage of image.
  • corbisimages.com
    • A rights-managed and royalty free stock photography website. Must register with the site in order to download and/or license images. Fees vary depending on usage of image.
  • us.fotolia.com
    • A stock-photography website. Must register with the site in order to license photos. Can also sign up for a subscription-based service.
  • apimages.com
    • A stock image website featuring images from Associated Press. Licensing fees vary depending on image usage. Mustregister with the website in order to download/license images.

    • A royalty-free and rights-managed stock photography website. Licensing fees of images vary depending on usage.Must register in order to download and/or license images.
  • photos.com
    • A royalty-free stock photography website. Prices vary depending on usage. Must register in order to use and/or purchase photos. Also has a subscription-based service which may be good for large purchases.
