Upcoming Deadlines

Deadline: 8/20/2014

Agency: Dept. of the Army -- USAMRAA

Program: DoD Ovarian Cancer Pilot Award

Description: The OCRP Pilot Award supports conceptually innovative, high-risk/high-reward research that could ultimately lead to critical discoveries or major advancements that will drive the field of ovarian cancer research forward. The proposed research must demonstrate a clear focus on ovarian cancer (e.g., using tissues, cell lines, datasets, or appropriate animal models, etc.). The proposed research should include a testable hypothesis based on strong scientific rationale and serve as a catalyst to expand or modify current thinking about and/or approaches in ovarian cancer research. Preliminary data are not required, but are allowed. The strength of the application should be based on sound scientific rationale and logical reasoning. Clinical trials will not be supported by this award mechanism.

Deadline: 8/29/2014

Agency: National Institutes of Health

Program: Peripheral Blood Biomarkers of Chronic Traumatic Brain Injury in Human Subjects - SBIR Direct Phase II (R44)

Description: The purpose of this FOA is to support projects that demonstrate the presence of protein biomarkers that are related to brain structure or neurological function in patients in the chronic stages of traumatic brain injury (CBI).The research will provide anatomical evidence for changes in neurological, cognitive or emotional status seen in the years that follow brain trauma, and may serve as surrogate markers for recovery or decline.

Award Amount: $750,000

New Opportunities

Deadline: 8/27/2014

Agency: National Science Foundation

Program: Cognitive Neuroscience

Description: The Cognitive Neuroscience Program seeks highly innovative and interdisciplinary proposals aimed at advancing a rigorous understanding of how the human brain supports thought, perception, affect, action, social processes, and other aspects of cognition and behavior, including how such processes develop and change in the brain and through time.

Deadline: 8/27/2014

Agency: National Science Foundation

Program: Research Experiences for Undergraduates  (REU)

Description: The Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program supports active research participation by undergraduate students in any of the areas of research funded by the National Science Foundation. REU projects involve students in meaningful ways in ongoing research programs or in research projects specifically designed for the REU program. This solicitation features two mechanisms for support of student research: (1)REU Sites are based on independent proposals to initiate and conduct projects that engage a number of students in research. REU Sites may be based in a single discipline or academic department or may offer interdisciplinary or multi-department research opportunities with a coherent intellectual theme. Proposals with an international dimension are welcome. (2) REU Supplements may be included as a component of proposals for new or renewal NSF grants or cooperative agreements or may be requested for ongoing NSF-funded research projects.

Award Amount: Not specified

Eligibility:  Undergraduate student participants in either REU Sites or REU Supplements must be U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or permanent residents of the United States.

Deadline: 9/7/2014

Agency: National Institutes of Health

Program: Chronic Inflammation and Age-related Disease (R01)

Description: The participating NIH Institutes and Centers invite applications to address both the origins and the effects of low level chronic inflammation in the onset and progression of age-related diseases and conditions. Chronic inflammation, as defined by elevated levels of both local and systemic cytokines and other pro-inflammatory factors, is a hallmark of aging in virtually all higher animals including humans and is recognized as a major risk factor for developing age-associated diseases. The spectra of phenotypes capable of generating low-level chronic inflammation and their defining mediators are not clear. Further, a clear understanding of how chronic inflammation compromises the integrity of cells or tissues leading to disease progression is lacking. The role of dietary supplements and/or nutritional status in chronic inflammation in age-related disease is also poorly studied. Thus, there is a critical need to establish the knowledge base that will allow a better understanding of the complex interplay between inflammation and age-related diseases. Applications submitted to this FOA should aim to clarify the molecular and cellular basis for the increase in circulating inflammatory factors with aging, and/or shed light on the cause-effect relationship between inflammation and disease, using pre-clinical (animal or cellular based) models.
