The application deadline for the North Carolina Biotechnology Center’s Undergraduate Research Fellowship is 12:00 NOON, January 25, 2012.  This program is intended for undergraduate science and engineering majors in conjunction with a research mentor in order to encourage interest in and preparation for careers in biotechnology. Description:  SPF is emerging as one of the most significant organizations in the United States which provides funding, capacity building, operating support and technical assistance to rural organizing efforts in the rural South. Having invested in projects that promote social, economic, and environmental justice in the Southeastern United States, SPF invites rural, grassroots community organizing nonprofits, striving for progressive change to submit proposals for the 2012 grant cycle.

Description:  Corporate grants support a variety of nonprofit organizations and programs that improve the quality of life in their communities. Typically, these programs serve a single community up to a few counties, although they may sometimes have a statewide impact. The grants range in size from several hundred dollars up to $10,000. Grants are limited to organizations that serve Progress Energy customers in Florida, North Carolina or South Carolina.There are no submission deadlines for corporate grants, which are reviewed on an ongoing basis.  The Progress Energy Foundation partners with nonprofits in North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida to help our communities understand and adapt to the new realities posed by the shifting energy landscape. The Progress Energy Foundation is currently accepting grant requests for consideration that focus on energy education, workforce development and the environment, with priority given to energy-related grants. The Progress Energy Foundation also provides support to a variety of local charities by matching contributions to our Employee Giving Campaign and Energy Neighbor Fund. Programs funded by foundation grants are larger in scope and impact than corporate grants, serving multiple regions or the entire state. Grants are limited to organizations that serve Progress Energy customers in Florida, North Carolina or South Carolina.

Program: NOAA Sea Grant Aquaculture Research Program 2012

Description:  This aquaculture research competition is designed to support the development of environmentally and economically sustainable ocean, coastal, or Great Lakes aquaculture. Therefore, proposed projects must support one or more of the goals stated in Sea Grant's National Strategic Plan (2009-2013) Focus Area of Safe and Sustainable Seafood Supply: 1) a sustainable supply of safe seafood to meet public demand; 2) a healthy domestic seafood industry that produces, processes, and markets seafood responsibly and efficiently; or 3) informed consumers who understand the importance of ecosystem health and sustainable harvesting practices to the future of our domestic fisheries, who appreciate the health benefits of seafood consumption, and who understand how to evaluate the safety of the seafood products they buy.

Award Amount: NOAA Sea Grant expects to have available up to $3,200,000 for aquaculture research projects for FY 2012, with individual research projects funded at a total of $50,000 to $500,000 in federal funding (or $75,000 to $750,000 total funding, including required nonfederal matching funds) for up to a two-year period. Additional match may be proposed, if appropriate.

Program: Lab to Marketplace: Tools for Biomedical and Behavioral Research (SBIR R43/R44)

Description:  This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages the translation of technologies for biomedical or behavioral research from academic and other non-small business research sectors to the marketplace. Small Business Concerns (SBCs) are encouraged to submit Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant applications that propose to further develop, make more robust, and make more user-friendly such technologies in preparation for commercial dissemination. It is expected that this activity will require partnerships and close collaboration between the original developers of these technologies and SBCs, which may be accomplished in any of a number of ways, including the use of multiple principle investigators.   

Award Amount: Budgets up to $350,000 total costs per year and time periods up to 2 years for Phase I (New) may be requested. Budgets up to $600,000 total costs per year and up to 3 years may be requested for Phase II.  Durations up to 2 years for Phase I and up to 3 years for Phase II may be requested.
