Spanish Animal-Nutrition Company Creates NC Office

Biovet LogoBiovet S.A. Laboratories, a Spanish animal-nutrition company, has established a small office in Research Triangle Park to better serve the North American market.

The company has leased space at the North Carolina Biotechnology Center’s Landing Pad, which provides interim office space and professional services to life science companies new to the state.

“North Carolina is a place well located, well connected with very good universities around and a lot of potential customers,” said Carlos Domenech, a managing director at Biovet who will head the office. “North Carolina is a great place to be. We have selected it due to the proximity to production areas and research centers.”

Biovet develops and sells feed additives for preventing disease and optimizing health and productivity in poultry, swine, fish, cattle and other livestock. Products include enzymes, probiotics, antioxidants, vitamins, flavorings, mycotoxin binders, nutritional supplements and digestives. The company also provides analytical, zootechnical, feed-formulation, and training and consultation services in animal nutrition.

Biovet sells products in about 50 countries through a network of distributors. It aims to add new customers and sell more product lines to existing customers from the North Carolina office, Domenech said.

Biovet has research collaborations with several U.S. universities, including North Carolina State University, and will be seeking more, Domenech said. The company is interested in conducting laboratory studies “to validate the effectiveness of our products and also to improve them,” he said.

Domenech is the company’s sole employee in North Carolina initially, but “hopefully, in the next few years we will have four to five employees,” he said.

Biovet is headquartered in Constantí, Spain, in the province of Tarragona in the Catalonia region of northeastern Spain. It was founded in 1984 by a group of veterinarians and chemists with experience in clinical practice and premix feed manufacturing.

The North Carolina office is the company’s first international location.

“We are excited to have Biovet open its North American office here in North Carolina and become a resident constituent of the growing animal health and nutrition ecosystem of the state," said Nandini Mendu, Ph.D., senior director for agricultural sector development at NCBiotech. "We look forward to working with the Biovet team and to connecting them with other companies in this cluster."
