NCBiotech Launches ‘Transformation Talk’ Podcast

Transformation Talk PodcastThe North Carolina Biotechnology Center has launched the inaugural installment of its new podcast series, “Transformation Talk.”

The 22-minute program, hosted by Jim Shamp, NCBiotech’s director of public relations, features former Biotech Center president Charles Hamner Jr., D.V.M., and Bill Bullock, senior vice president of economic development and statewide operations.

In keeping with the Biotech Center’s observation of its 35th anniversary, Hamner and Bullock offer a significant overview of the state’s challenges and successes in transforming its economy from dependence on tobacco, textiles and furniture to one of global life science leadership.

Hamner moved to North Carolina from Virginia to lead the Center in 1988, four years after its founding. During this first half of the two-part podcast, he discusses the changes he experienced in his 14 years as the state’s chief life science economic developer. With an early state commitment to the Center of about $3 million a year, and a handful of life science companies employing about 1,000 people statewide, Hamner is credited with shepherding the sector into an unlikely position of global power in pharmaceuticals, agriculture technology and related fields.

Bullock holds an undergraduate degree in cell biology and biochemistry from the University of California, San Diego and an MBA from the Kenan-Flagler Business School at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He came to North Carolina from California in 1991, after working for five years as a research technician in a biotechnology company. He has spent more than 16 years at NCBiotech and also worked in biotech development with the state’s Department of Commerce. Bullock leads the team that implements international corporate recruitment activities and oversees NCBiotech's statewide offices, agriculture sector development team, and corporate communications.
