The Johnston County Workforce Center (JCWC) will be getting a $1.3 million renovation. Upgrades will support the skills needed with the expansions being done at Grifols and Novo Nordisk to name a few.

Since the center’s grand opening in 2005, it has been a model for life sciences training and development centers in North Carolina. The updates being done will help keep up with the emerging opportunities in the life science field.

The state continues to lead the nation in bio-manufacturing workers, largely a credit to its ready talent. Innovative and hands - on educational places like the JCWC are key in the professional development of students and professionals. The Johnston County Economic Development Office (JCEDO) facilitates value-added interaction between government, education and the private sector in encouraging and promoting job creation and economic investment in Johnston County.

Renovations, which should be complete by early September, will accommodate more hands-on lab training and simulation opportunities in settings that mirror bio-manufacturing work stations. Chad Henry, corporate vice president at Novo Nordisk, praised the Workforce Center stating, “Together, we are creating a modern simulated bio-manufacturing area that has some of the latest equipment and technologies for students”.

Grifols celebrates 50 years in Clayton

Grifols, a global manufacturer of plasma-based medicines headquartered in Barcelona, Spain, held a celebration to mark 50 years in Clayton, NC.

Grifols acquired the Johnston County facility in 2011 from Talecris Biotherapeutics, turning Grifols into a top-three plasma-sector powerhouse.

Atlantic Fish Co develops cultivated black sea bass
Raleigh sustainable food startup Atlantic Fish Co has developed and tested a cultivated black sea bass prototype, the company’s latest milestone in the production of sustainable seafood made from harvested fish cells.

In an announcement this week with the North Carolina Food Innovation Lab (NCFIL) in Kannapolis, Atlantic Fish said development of the sea bass represents a breakthrough in cellular agriculture. The company produces seafood by harvesting fish cells, feeding them nutrients and giving them a structure to grow on.

FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies to double Holly Springs biomanufacturing campus

FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies, a global contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO), plans to invest $1.2 billion to double the size of its manufacturing facility currently under construction in Holly Springs.

When completed, the site will be the largest end-to-end cell culture CDMO facility in North America, housing state-of-the-art biopharmaceutical manufacturing equipment and technology, including two large manufacturing suites for large-scale monoclonal antibody drug substance and drug product manufacturing.
