Biopharma Manufacturing Job Opportunities in North Carolina

Some of the biggest names in medicine make their products right here in North Carolina.

Most of the more than 100 biopharma manufacturing companies statewide are currently hiring, with the potential for 5,000 new jobs in the next five years. What are these jobs, and what does it take to get one?

We’ve highlighted three examples here.

  • Process Engineers assist with the design, operation, and improvement of processes, equipment and facilities for biopharma manufacturing facilities.
     

    Starting with the process developed during research, this person would scale up that process to accurately produce commercial quantities of medicine. This might involve writing specifications for equipment, training equipment operators, and maintaining and troubleshooting the equipment or process as it is used.
     

    Educational requirement: BS in biochemical, bioprocess, chemical or mechanical engineering, or food science with an emphasis on food engineering.

  • Quality Assurance Associates ensure product quality and company compliance with FDA and other regulations.
     

    They also check to make sure all production batches were completed according to standard operating procedures (SOP), review quality control testing to ensure the values are within range for quality and conducts inspections or audits of processes and systems to ensure protocols are meticulously followed.
     

    Educational requirement: BS in science or engineering.

  • Quality Control Associate test ingredients for medicines, intermediary products, and final solutions or tablets to ensure the medicine meets quality standards.
     

    Daily work includes taking samples, creating solutions, running tests, and documenting results according to FDA regulations. Individuals in this role may also analyze results or perform initial troubleshooting to resolve quality issues.
     

    Educational Requirement: BS in a scientific discipline.


Job Qualifications

These jobs require coursework in a combination of some of these courses: organic and analytical chemistry, cellular and molecular biology, biochemistry, and microbiology.

Also, production of medicines follows very specific regulations, called current good manufacturing practices (cGMP). Familiarity with these subjects and practices is critical for success in biopharma manufacturing, and you can learn these and other relevant skills by taking courses at NC State’s Biomanufacturing Training and Education Center, known as BTEC.
