A State-based Approach to Genomics and Precision Health

Emerging genomic and precision medicine technologies have begun to transition from promise to practical use. Genomic sequencing is increasingly recognized as a diagnostic tool for selected patient populations with rare disease. In addition, most individuals in the population carry genetic variants that have an impact on the effectiveness and safety of many commonly used medications. More broadly, precision health recognizes the interplay between genetic, social and environmental factors in multiple diseases of public health significance.  However, to date, there are only a few state-based population-based efforts to leverage new science with capacity of medicine, public health and the private sector in improving health outcomes. This seminar will focus on two such initiatives, the Alabama Genomic Health Initiative (AGHI) and the North Carolina Precision Health Collaborative (NCPHC).

Bruce Korf phd

Bruce Korf, Ph.D. will discuss ongoing results and lessons learned from the AGHI sponsored by the state of Alabama to test the feasibility and utility of genomic platforms at a broad, state-wide population level. AGHI seeks to address racial disparity in genomic research recruitment and representation and investigate personal and clinical outcomes within for rare disease diagnosis and population screening.

Sara Imhof

Sara Imhof, Ph.D. will give an overview of the North Carolina Precision Health Collaborative (NCPHC), a multistakeholder, public-private effort to advance transformative precision health through innovation and partnership. NCPHC leverages North Carolina’s vibrant life science ecosystem to foster research, enable providers, engage industry and empower citizens to improve health outcomes and optimize resource utilization in North Carolina.
