Teacher Assistance

The Biotechnology Center provides a comprehensive program of support for K-12 North Carolina teachers including:

Education Grants. The Biotechnology Center awarded 19 grants in 2005 totaling $356,161 to strengthen bioscience education and training programs.

Summer Workshops For Educators. The workshops are designed for current and pre-service high school teachers--although college and middle school instructors may also apply. Workshops are taught at colleges and universities around the state.

  • The registration fee is $75, but workshop attendance, lodging and two meals per day will be provided free to North Carolina educators. Almost 1,300 teachers have been trained as a result of these programs. A stipend of $50 per day will be provided to participants who complete the workshop.
  • All workshops carry renewal credits.

Teachers' Corner offers a collection of resources available on the Web, featuring lab activities, publications and field trip ideas.

Laboratory Supplies Program. Each Biotechnology Center workshop graduate receives a special order form each year for biotechnology lab supplies valued at $200 from Carolina Biological Supply.

Equipment Loan Program. The Biotechnology Center maintains biotechnology equipment for loan to workshop graduates around the state.

Video Loan Program. All teachers are eligible for this program. Contact the Biotechnology Center's library to borrow biotechnology video or audio tapes for classroom use.
