Biotechnology Research Grant

Biotechnology Research Grants support novel research projects that have the potential to strengthen biotechnology research and development at academic and non-profit research institutions in the early stages of building their research capacity. Investigators at the main campuses of Duke, UNC-CH and NCSU are not eligible to apply.

Awards are intended to support the generation of preliminary data required to attract funding from other sources, with the ultimate goal of technology commercialization.

Focus Areas for 2009 - 2010 are:

Nanobiotechnology uses nanotechnology to further the goals of biotechnology. Projects may include the use of biomolecules as part of or as an inspiration for nanotechnological devices, or use other applications that overlap between biology and nanotechnology. Nanotechnology is defined as the control of matter on an atomic and molecular scale and deals with structures of the size 100 nanometers or smaller.

Marine Biotechnology involves efforts to use marine organisms or their components as either the source or target of biotechnology applications.

Biotechnology Combination Medical Devices incorporate at least two of the regulated component categories of device, drug, or biologic into one product. Examples include: cellular and tissue implants; infused or encapsulated cells; artificial and replacement organs; cardiac, neural, and neuromuscular stimulation devices; interactive wound dressing; and tissue-based products.

Biotechnology applications to Natural Products includes the utilization of biotechnology applications to understand active constituents in plants and to design and commercialize new pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals based on natural products.

Biotechnology applications to Nutrition, Food Safety, and Agriculture is the use of any technological application that uses biological systems, living organisms, or derivatives thereof, to make or modify products or processes for specific use in nutrition, food safety or agriculture.

Biotechnology applications to Drug Discovery is the use of any technological application that uses biological systems, living organisms, or derivatives thereof, to make or modify products or processes involved in drug discovery.
