Wood Named Vice President, Business and Technology Development

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C., Oct. 1, 2002 - R. Paul Wood, a seasoned marketing, business-development and industrial recruitment executive, has been named vice president of business and technology development at the North Carolina Biotechnology Center.

In his new position Wood is responsible for directing the Center's Business and Technology Development Program, which provides funding and other assistance to young biotechnology companies and recruits companies to the state.

"I'm looking forward to continuing our partnership with the Department of Commerce and the biotech community to produce long-term economic benefits for the entire state," Wood said.

He said he would emphasize opportunities in biomanufacturing. "The biomanufacturing crisis is real," he said. "The shortage of manufacturing capacity has been well documented. We envision this situation as a window of opportunity for North Carolina. We will target opportunities that will create quality jobs."

Wood will report to Dr. Ken Tindall, senior vice president for science and business development. "Paul is a natural leader with substantial experience in business and economic development," Tindall said. "We are pleased that he will be using these talents to direct the Center's efforts in business and technology development."

Before joining the Center in October 1999 as an industrial development specialist, Wood spent 32 years working for major architectural, engineering and construction companies in North and South Carolina. Clients included Bayer, Biogen, Ciba-Geigy, Eisai, Glaxo Wellcome, Pfizer and Wyeth Lederle Vaccines and Pediatrics.

Wood has extensive civic and professional affiliations. He serves on the board of directors of the Carolinas Chapter of the International Society of Pharmaceutical Engineers and the North Carolina Industrial Developers Association. He has a bachelor's degree in economic and business administration from Wofford College.
