United Therapeutics Expansion Brings 300 New Employees

Improving on its initial expansion plans, Maryland-based United Therapeutics will employ around 300 workers and increase the size of its new manufacturing and office facility in the Research Triangle Park, the Triangle Business Journal reported.

United Therapeutics announced in 2006 it would spend $54.3 million to build a 100,000-square-foot building to accommodate its clinical development and sales/marketing staff. The company could now spend around $100 million and double the size of its facility to 200,000.

The facility will also house manufacturing operations for oral version of treprostinil used to treat pulmonary hypertension.

"Some of it, I think, is just a natural maturation of our own ability to synthesize what our needs are," Chief Operating Officer Roger Jeffs told the publication. "And some of that is to handle our enhanced needs for clinical development."
