Targacept Launches ADHD Trial

Winston-Salem-based Targacept has started a small-scale clinical trial of one of its drug candidates, to examine the effects of two different doses in adults with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

The trial is to test the experimental compound AZD3480 in 24 volunteers at Fletcher Allen Health Care, an affiliate of the University of Vermont College of Medicine. The drug is being developed in a collaboration with AstraZeneca.

Targacept is developing a new class of drugs, called NNR Therapeutics, for the treatment of central nervous system diseases and disorders. Its product candidates target brain-cell regions called neuronal nicotinic receptors that regulate some functions of the nervous system. Its product candidates are aimed at treating a wide range of disorders, including Alzheimer's disease, cognitive dysfunction in schizophrenia, pain and depression.
