ScienceDirect Opportunity Deadline Nov. 1

The North Carolina Biotechnology Center's Library is holding its annual consortium to provide desktop access to Elsevier B.V.'s Corporate Edition of ScienceDirect full-text science journals. This will be the fourth year of the consortium, which currently includes 293 researchers from 19 different North Carolina companies. In addition, this year brings two new offerings.

This unlimited-use subscription at the broadest level of access comes at the remarkably advantageous price of $1,060 a year per individual, with a minimum of three subscribers per company. Since the usual price is more than $50,000 per company for a minimum of 50 researchers, we are pleased to offer you this option since the consortium allows us to share this minimum subscription.

For the Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, 2009 licensing opportunity, the cost will be $1,060 per individual user license. A minimum of three researcher licenses per company, for an annual cost of $3,180, is required by Elsevier.

Elsevier is also offering two new products through the NCBC Consortium in 2009 - access to their ScienceDirect Corporate Edition for Books and the Scopus citation database. Companies that are already part of the consortium may be interested in adding these products to their subscription, and new companies may want to purchase subscriptions to any combination of the three products (ScienceDirect journals, ScienceDirect books, and Scopus). Below is a description of each:

ScienceDirect Corporate Edition for Books

Elsevier has compiled more than 9,500 electronic books into this collection, which includes book series, reference works, handbooks and other books, back to 1995.

The normal starting point for this product is $10,000 (for 1 to 50 researchers). Through the consortium, North Carolina companies can subscribe to the Books package for only $200 per researcher, with a $2,000 minimum per company.

Scopus citation database

Covering three times as many journals as PubMed, Scopus's database indexes 15,800 journal titles from more than 4,000 publishers (including 650 trade publications), 36 million abstracts, 386 million scientific Web pages, 22 million patent records, articles-in-press and more!

The normal starting point for this product is $13,500 (for 1 to 50 researchers). Through the consortium, North Carolina companies can subscribe for only $300 per researcher, with a $3,000 minimum per company.

The sign-up deadline is Nov. 1, 2008. Fore more information, contact Karin Shank
