Jet Fuel Studies Bring Hamner Institutes $655,000

The Hamner Institutes for Health Sciences, announced it has received a $655,367 research contract from the Navy Health Research Center – Environmental Health Effects Laboratory Detachment.

The lead investigator on the grant is Dr. Darol E. Dodd, a senior research toxicologist at CIIT and director of toxicology and preclinical studies at The Hamner. The grant will allow Dr. Dodd to conduct inhalation toxicity studies on a new jet fuel, Syntroleum® S-8.

Dodd's research will include the fuels characteristics and a neurobehavioral assessment of the effects related to inhalation exposure. This research is part of The Hamner’s specialized and ongoing inhalation toxicity studies that support health-hazard assessments of chemicals, drugs and related products.

"Dr. Dodd is an expert in the area of inhalation toxicology and has an excellent track record in conducting health-hazard assessments," said Dr. William F. Greenlee, president and CEO of The Hamner.

"Studying the toxicity of jet fuel is not only important to the health of our men and women in the Armed Forces, but to health of the civilian population at large."
