Data Project Brings $970,000 to Hamner Institutes

The Hamner Institutes for Health Sciences has received a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency to analyze the effects of certain chemicals and pesticides on human health.

The three-year grant includes $750,000 to develop models that interpret data gathered to monitor effects of certain pesticides. Another $220,000 is earmarked for projects to discover how certain kinds of exposure to chemicals in the environment translates to levels of those chemicals in the bloodstream or tissue.

"This grant gives us the opportunity to gain extensive knowledge in how chemicals found in human blood and tissue can potentially impact overall health," said Dr. Harvey Clewell, director of the Center for Human Health Advancement at the Hamner.

The Hamner, located in Research Triangle Park, is an independent, nonprofit organization that offers an open collaborative and cross-disciplinary approach to translational reasearch to enhance the value of the investment in biomedical sciences.
