Greater Charlotte took time Thursday night to celebrate its successes in biotechnology.
The BioNight celebration highlighted achievements in economic development, research and education.
Dr. Simon Pedder, CEO of Chelsea Therapeutics talked about why he chose to build the now public company in Charlotte – talent, airport hub, quality of life and cost of doing business.
The event also honored:
Tamika Stubbs, biology teacher at E.E. Waddell High School with the 2009 BioAchievement in Education award. During 2008, she received the President’s Award from the Entomological Society for innovative teaching and was recognized as top ten among over 1000 teachers world-wide from the Biotechnology Institute.
Pinku Mukherjee, the Irwin Belk Distinguished Scholar in Cancer Research at UNC Charlotte with the BioAchievement Award for excellence in research. The Biotechnology Center helped recruit Dr. Mukherjee to North Carolina from the Mayo Clinic via the Oliver Smithies Faculty Recruitment Grant.
BioConnect, a regional exchange group formed in partnership with the NC Biotechnology Center hosted the event.
