BioSciNC and Partnering Survey Under Way

Responses are pouring in for the current survey of North Carolina's bioscience industry.

The survey allows North Carolina companies to update their information listed in BioSciNC, the North Carolina Biotechnology Center's online biotechnology company directory. Currently, the directory lists 431 bioscience companies and more than 500 companies that support the industry.

Some companies are also receiving a more detailed survey for the Life Science Business Development Initiative (LSBDI). This survey includes non-confidential information about a company's business development and licensing interests. The Biotechnology Center's business development staff will then work with larger companies to match their licensing needs with North Carolina companies.

BioSciNC companies are categorized according to their specific area of research. Information can be searched online according to those categories or geographically by city, county or region. The directory even contains listings of multiple research sites for a single company.

"Studies have shown that being a part of an industry cluster benefits all companies in that industry," said Susie Corbett, the Biotechnology Center's vice president of library and information services.

"The BioSciNC survey enables us to accurately portray North Carolina's cluster, which benefits the whole industry."

For the last four years, Ernst and Young has ranked the North Carolina industry third in the nation. The survey allows the Biotechnology Center to access the most current information when promoting the industry and identifying opportunities for growth statewide. The publication A Quick List incorporates basic contact information from all research and development, production and manufacturing, and contract research and testing companies.
