Global medical technology company BD plans a $134.7 million expansion in North Carolina over the next five years. BD will build a new plant in Wilson County and grow operations in Durham County, overall creating 274 new jobs in the state.
The company currently employs 578 people at three facilities in Durham County, including BD Diagnostics-TriPath, BD Technologies in Research Triangle Park (formerly BD Research) and a manufacturing facility in Durham. BD will add a total of 182 employees to the three sites, with an average salary of $54,000.
In Wilson County, BD will build a new BD Medical plant that will make pre-filled and pre-fillable products. Here the company anticipates 92 new positions that earn an average income of $46,000, not including benefits.
These projects were made possible in part by a Job Development Investment Grant, incentives awarded only to new and expanding businesses and industrial projects whose benefits exceed the costs to the state and which would not be undertaken in North Carolina without the grant.
The N.C. Department of Commerce estimates the project will produce a positive, cumulative net state revenue impact of about $1.3 million under the terms of the nine-year agreement.
"BD's presence is another example of why North Carolina has been consistently ranked among the top three states in biotechnology and life sciences," said Gov. Mike Easley in a statement. "This announcement shows that our efforts in education and job training keep North Carolina a nationally recognized leader in the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries."
