NC Scientists Team Up Against Shellfish Toxin
Marine scientists in Beaufort have partnered with a small Durham firm, Mercury Science, to develop and market a test kit that streamlines detection of a sometimes-deadly shellfish toxin.
These test kits enable scientists to detect and measure domoic acid, one of the main marine algal toxins. It is known to cause serious illness and death in humans and marine mammals.
