Arbovax Aims to Remove the Sting from Mosquito-Borne Diseases Arbovax researcher pipettes a sample for the company's development of a dengue fever vaccine.

Mosquitoes are the culprit behind the spread of some pretty serious diseases: West Nile virus, yellow fever and Japanese encephalitis.

Until recently, the United States has been free from another, dengue fever. But in 2005, it spread over the border from Mexico into Texas, hospitalizing two dozen people, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

Though mosquitoes are more of a summer pest, Raleigh-based Arbovax isn't waiting until then to combat dengue fever and other diseases. It's ramping up its efforts to develop a vaccine against those and many other insect-borne diseases.

Read more on what makes Arbovax's approach unique in this story by Jim Shamp, News and Publications editor.
