NCBC Industrial Fellowship Program

Sponsoring Company Eligibility

The sponsoring company must be a biotechnology R&D or contract research company with research operations in North Carolina. The company must have a senior scientist on staff that will provide industry-oriented scientific mentorship. Full-time academic scientists are not eligible as industrial scientific mentors.

Fellowship Candidate Eligibility

  • NCBC Industrial Fellowship candidates must have been awarded their Ph.D. degree prior to the start date of the program.
  • Candidates should be junior scientists that have not previously worked in a company setting at the Ph.D. level.
  • Candidates may currently be academic postdoctoral fellows.
  • Funding through this program is not intended for supporting interns or technicians. Candidates must have received graduate or postdoctoral training in a North Carolina university or research institution and/or currently live in the state.
  • Candidates should be citizens or permanent residents of the United States.

Miscellaneous

Fellowships may not be extended beyond two years.

Sponsoring companies are under no commitment to hire fellows upon completion of fellowship.

A company may sponsor no more than one North Carolina Biotechnology Center Industrial Fellow at a time.

Industrial Fellowship candidates should understand that they are being employed as full-time company employees and are expected to perform as such.

Industrial Fellowship candidates should have genuine industry aspirations and a willingness to leave academia.  The Industrial Fellowship Program is not an academic postdoctoral fellowship and candidates should understand that there may be limited opportunity to publish or present the results of work performed as a fellow.

Industrial Fellowship candidates should demonstrate compelling scientific potential as evidenced by strong publication/presentation records, invention disclosures or grant success.  Further, candidates should show an enthusiasm for research; a capacity for critical thinking; leadership, independence and initiative; strong communication skills; a recognition of deadlines and deliverables; and the ability to function as a “team player.”

The NCBC will monitor progress through the review of periodic progress reports and provide fellows with access to additional local professional development opportunities (entrepreneurism courses, business/industry symposia, networking events, etc).

Acknowledgement of NCBC fellowship support is expected when appropriate. References in presentations, publications, etc. should identify the fellow as a "North Carolina Biotechnology Center Industrial Fellow" or similar.
