Biotechnology Workforce

With a workforce of more than 59,000 working in North Carolina’s biotechnology industry, the state offers biotechnology companies of all sizes a diverse talent pool.

North Carolina is home to several of the country’s top universities: including Wake Forest University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina State University and Duke University. Individuals come from all over the world to earn academic degrees in our top-notch biotechnology and life-science programs.

The state is also focused on specialized training for the notoriously productive citizens; one of our largest and greatest examples of workforce training initiatives is NCBioImpact.

Workforce Training

North Carolina’s unique biomanufacturing and pharmaceutical training consortium, NCBioImpact, has equipped citizens to work for companies like Novartis and Fujifilm Diosynth Biotechnologies.  This consortium includes:

  • Biomanufacturing Research Institute and Technology Enterprise (BRITE)
  • Golden LEAF Biomanufacturing Training and Education Center (BTEC)
  • BioNetwork Centers across the state with affiliated 2-year community colleges

NCBioImpact provides the following benefits to biotech employers:

  • Subsidized training to employer specifications
  • Availability of workers at all talent and experience levels
  • Comprehensive support, from customized training to professional development
  • Hands-on training in state-of-the-art, pilot-scale facilities

This unique consortium was initially formed to address the needs of biomanufacturing companies in North Carolina, and continues to support the state’s thriving life-science community.
