Young Scientists Make Their ‘Pitches’ at ECU

A shiny new trophy made its debut on October 30, 2015 at East Carolina University’s second annual Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition.

It’s the 3MT Departmental Cup, a trophy purchased by ECU through a grant from the North Carolina Biotechnology Center. This beautiful award will symbolize the achievement of science communication excellence on the ECU campus from now on.

Eighteen student scientists were judged on how well they could present their research projects. In just three minutes. With a single slide. The students gave their talks in three simultaneous rounds.  Two finalists were chosen from each round.  Competition was stiff.

The Grand Champion Award went to Annalise vonderEmbse, who will represent ECU at the regional competition in Charlotte. The People’s Choice Award went to Tom Miller.  Read more about the competition and the winners here.

NCBiotech Vice President of Statewide Operations Mark Phillips was one of the featured speakers.  In addition, he and I were honored to present the Departmental Cup to the Department of Kinesiology for the highest points to a single department.

The cup will stay with the winning department until the following year’s competition, reminding students that communication will be important throughout their careers.

This is the first year the ECU 3MT event has received a BES grant.  It was exciting for NCBiotech to be a part of this program that encourages young ECU scientists to develop their presentation skills along with their scientific expertise.

NCBiotech’s event and meeting grants support a broad spectrum of science-based events in North Carolina that reach thousands of scientists, students and citizens each year. It’s another of the many ways NCBiotech applies state funding from the General Assembly each year to continue building the life sciences statewide.
