Bill Schy is responsible for the management of the Education Enhancement Grants Program, which supports development of biotechnology programs and curricula at all levels of education at institutions across North Carolina.  He also directs the Center’s Summer Biotechnology Workshops for Educators Program and supporting  programs that include the Free Lab Supplies Program for the Classroom and the Reservable Lab Equipment Loan Program. 

Dr. Schy provides presentations across the state on such subjects as Careers in Biotechnology, Applications of Biotechnology, and Grant Writing.  He is a member of the NC Science Leadership Association and the NC Science Teachers Association.

Schy brings prior experience in academic research and teaching, as well as industry experience, to his position at the North Carolina Biotechnology Center.  His research interests have included characterizing mechanisms of mutation induction by chemicals and developing methods for mutation detection.   Schy also taught Biology at the college level for several years.  In industry, he worked with colleagues at Eli Lilly and Company on the development of the anti-cancer drug, Gemcitabine (Gemzar).   After moving to North Carolina in 1995, he worked as a Director of Paternity Analysis at a genetic testing company.

Schy earned his Ph.D. in Cell Biology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  He joined the Education and Workforce Training Program at the Biotechnology Center in 1997.
