Description: NC IDEA provides small grants to high-tech startup companies to support business activities that validate potential markets, reduce risk of early failure, and advance projects to the point of self-sustainability at which time they are suitable for private equity investment. NC IDEA considers awarding grants to technology based businesses with the potential to become high-growth companies. NC IDEA defines a high growth company as a fast growing startup with a significant market size that will consider equity financing as part of their growth strategy. NC IDEA has awarded over $2.7M in grants to help 72 startup companies in NC since the program's inception. NC IDEA targets high-tech companies that need help crossing the chasm between initial product development and venture capital funding.

Program: Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR)

Description: The purpose of Phase I of the SBIR program is for firms to conduct research and development which will allow the Government to determine the scientific or technical merit and feasibility of concepts, ideas and quality of performance as a prerequisite for further Government support which may follow in Phase II of the program. Any organization or individuals receiving awards under Phase I are be eligible to compete for a Phase II award. Program: Administrative Supplements for Summer Research Experiences for Students and Science Teachers

Description: As noted in the NIEHS 2006 Strategic Plan, the NIEHS will enhance opportunities for young, motivated high school and undergraduate students, and science teachers, to actively participate in environmental health research. The NIEHS hereby notifies Principal Investigators with R01, R15, R37, or P01 awards that funds are available for administrative supplements to support summer research experiences for talented and gifted high school students, college undergraduates, and science teachers. By offering an introduction to environmental health science research, the NIEHS expects to increase the number, and elevate the credentials, of the pool of applicants to graduate programs in the environmental health sciences.

Agency: Lemelson-MIT Program

Program: InvenTeam Initiative

Description: Created by the Lemelson-MIT Program, the InvenTeam initiative provides opportunities for high school students to cultivate their creativity, curiosity, and problem-solving abilities and apply lessons from science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) subjects to invent technological solutions to real-world problems. InvenTeams comprised of high school students, teachers, and mentors receive grants of up to $10,000 to invent technological solutions to a problem of their choice. Projects can range from assistive devices to environmental technologies and consumer goods. Applicants are encouraged to consider the needs of the world's poorest people (those earning $2 or less a day) when brainstorming ideas. STEM educators at high schools and nonprofit educational organizations who have not received an InvenTeam grant within the past three years are eligible to apply. Funds may be allocated for project-related research, materials, and learning experiences. Funds may not be used to purchase capital equipment or professional services.
