UNC's Kohn Wins Biotech Prize

Eight years ago the North Carolina Biotechnology Center put nearly $60,000 into Harold Kohn's epilepsy research quest at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

That grant helped Kohn develop a new drug that's now helping people around the world avoid dangerous seizures.

And this summer the Biotechnology Center's belief in Kohn will also be matched with a prestigious biotechnology award.

Kohn, the Kenan professor of medicinal chemistry and natural products at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, will receive the Paul R. Dawson Biotechnology Award during the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy's 2010 Annual Meeting and Seminars in Seattle, Wash., July 10-14.

The award is named in honor of Amgen's former vice president of marketing and sales, Paul Dawson, a staunch supporter of education in biotechnology. Kohn will receive a double helix glass sculpture and monetary prize.
