Syngenta Makes Way for Growth

Research Triangle Park-based agribusiness Syngenta Biotechnology Inc. (SBI) is getting ready to plow down some of its property to rebuild for the future.

The global firm, with roots in the 1984 North Carolina launch of its predecessor by Mary-Dell Chilton, Ph.D., has completed its move into a leased facility and will soon begin demolishing a 110,000-square-foot building to make room for a new Research Triangle Park headquarters.

SBI recently bought an additional 50-acre tract in RTP to accommodate its expansion plans.

The company is a subsidiary of Syngenta AG, a Swiss company formed in 2000 by an agribusiness marriage between pharmaceutical giants Novartis and AstraZeneca. Syngenta employs more than 25,000 people worldwide, including more than 500 in North Carolina.

Syngenta's North American headquarters for its insecticide and herbicide business, Syngenta Crop Protection, is in Greensboro.
