Weekly Grant Funding Opportunities

Please feel free to send special funding search requests any time (susan_craft@ncbiotech.org).  Please note that beginning July 1, 2013, grant funding requests will be rolled into our regular research and will include a fee of $80/hour. Also, let us know if any of your partners have submitted grant applications to funding announcements posted in the weekly grant alert emails.  We would love to hear of their successes!

Announcements

The Department of Defense (DoD) intends to issue four Broad Agency Announcements (BAA) as contemplated in Federal Acquisition Regulation Parts 35.016 and 6.102(d)(2) for the Rapid Innovation Fund (RIF) Program on or about July 12, 2013.

The RIF Program was established to facilitate the rapid insertion of innovative small business technologies into military systems or programs that meet critical national security needs. RIF also intends to facilitate innovative technologies that show a clear transition path to fielding the technology into existing defense acquisition programs.

Each BAA will list the technology areas of interest, instructions for submission of white papers and source selection criteria. Subsequent RIF proposals will be invited based on the evaluation results of the white paper submission. Those selected for RIF awards may receive up to $3 million in funding. The period of performance for RIF awards shall not exceed 24 months.

Participation in the DoD RIF BAA is open to all responsible sources capable of satisfying the Government's needs; however preference shall be given to small businesses capable of transitioning innovative technologies.

Grant Opportunities

Deadline: 7/22/2013

Agency: National Science Foundation

Program: Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Program

Description:  The Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Program is a Foundation-wide activity that offers the National Science Foundation's most prestigious awards in support of junior faculty who exemplify the role of teacher-scholars through outstanding research, excellent education and the integration of education and research within the context of the mission of their organizations. Such activities should build a firm foundation for a lifetime of leadership in integrating education and research. NSF encourages submission of CAREER proposals from junior faculty members at all CAREER-eligible organizations and especially encourages women, members of underrepresented minority groups, and persons with disabilities to apply.

Award Amount: $400,000.00

Eligibility:  U.S. academic institutions; nonprofit, non-degree granting organizations such as museums, observatories or research laboratories.

Deadline: 7/31/2013

Agency: Dept. of the Army -- USAMRAA

Program: DoD Prostate Cancer Exploration-Hypothesis Development Award

Description:  The Exploration - Hypothesis Development Award supports the exploration of highly innovative, untested, potentially high-gain concepts, theories, paradigms, and/or methods that address an important problem in prostate cancer. Results of studies conducted through this award may provide the scientific rationale upon which a new hypothesis can be based or initial proof-of-principle of an innovative hypothesis. This award is designed to provide investigators the opportunity to pursue serendipitous observations that may reveal entirely new avenues for investigation. Presentation of preliminary data is inconsistent with the intent of this award mechanism and is therefore strongly discouraged. However, logical reasoning and a sound scientific rationale for the proposed work must be described. The PCRP seeks applications from the wide spectrum of basic, population science, translational, and clinical research. In addition, applicants are expected to address at least one of the PCRP focus areas and are highly encouraged to address one of the PCRP overarching challenges. If the proposed project does not address any of the overarching challenges, the application should include a description to justify how the project will nevertheless address a critical need in the field of prostate cancer research and/or patient care. Research involving human subjects is encouraged under this funding opportunity but is restricted to studies without clinical trials. Correlative studies associated with an existing clinical trial are allowed if they are determined to be no greater than minimal risk by the local IRB of record and the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC) Office of Research Protections (ORP), Human Research Protection Office (HRPO).

Agency: National Institutes of Health

Program: Preclinical Innovation Program

Description:  This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), the Preclinical Innovation Program (PIP), issued by NIAID, encourages Research Project Grant (R01) applications in non-vaccine biomedical prevention (nBP) research. The PIP is intended to support high risk/innovative research and development efforts designed to establish and maintain a sustainable pipeline of nBP candidates, drug delivery systems (DDS) and supporting technologies for the prevention of HIV acquisition/transmission. The PIP will support novel and under-explored approaches to strengthen and maintain an innovative pipeline of nBP strategies including microbicides, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), and Multipurpose Prevention Technologies (MPT). To accomplish this, the PIP will also support a range of nBP DDS including, but not limited to, pericoital and sustained delivery of single and combination candidates and strategies using gels, films, intravaginal rings (IVR), oral, implant and/or injection delivery methods.

Award Amount: $400,000.00

Program: DoD Peer Reviewed Medical Discovery Award

Description:  The intent of the PRMRP Discovery Award is to support innovative, untested, high-risk/ potentially high-reward concepts, theories, paradigms, and/or methods. Studies supported by this award are expected to lay the groundwork for future avenues of scientific investigation. The proposed research project should include a well-formulated, testable hypothesis based on strong scientific rationale and study design. The proposed research project should be novel and innovative. Innovative research may introduce a new paradigm, challenge existing paradigms, look at existing problems from new perspectives, or exhibit other highly creative qualities. Research that is an incremental advance upon published data is not considered innovative and is not consistent with the intent of this award mechanism.
