New Opportunities

Deadline: 6/16/2014

Agency: Food and Drug Administration

Program: Data Concepts and Terminology Standards for Clinical Research and Drug Development

Description: The Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER) receives a vast and growing amount of data in a variety of regulatory submissions from a multitude of sources and in a variety of formats. This wealth of data holds great potential to advance CDER’s regulatory and scientific work, but the present lack of standardized data creates significant challenges to realizing that potential. The volume and complexity of drug-related information submitted to CDER for regulatory review is creating significant challenges to the Center’s ability to efficiently and effectively perform its critical public health mission. The lack of standardized data affects CDER’s review processes by curtailing a reviewer’s ability to perform integral tasks such as rapid acquisition, analysis, storage and reporting of regulatory data. Improved data quality, accessibility and predictability will give reviewers more time to carry out complex analyses, ask in-depth questions and address late-emerging issues. Standardized data will allow reviewers to increase review consistency and perform evaluations across the drug lifecycle. This will enhance the Center’s performance across key drug regulatory functions and ongoing business operations, including pre-market review, post-market safety, oversight of drug quality, and oversight of drug promotion. In accordance with the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Circular A-119, the FDA will: use voluntary, consensus-based standards development processes in place of government unique standards unless such standards are inconsistent with law or otherwise impractical; advocate to align these standards with existing health information technology initiatives, laws, regulations, and mandates; and promote coordination with other standards currently in use. The projects selected under this funding opportunity must adhere to these principles.

Diabetes Research Centers are designed to support and enhance the national research effort in diabetes, its complications, and related endocrine and metabolic diseases. Diabetes Research Centers support three primary research-related activities: Research Core services, a Pilot and Feasibility (P&F) program, and an Enrichment program. All activities pursued by Diabetes Research Centers are designed to enhance the efficiency, productivity, effectiveness and multidisciplinary nature of research in Diabetes Research Center topic areas. The NIDDK Diabetes Research Centers program in 2013 consists of 16 Centers each located at outstanding research institutions with documented programs of excellence in diabetes-related research. Program: Morris K. Udall Centers of Excellence for Parkinson's Disease Research

Description: This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites applications for the Morris K. Udall Centers of Excellence for Parkinsons Disease Research program. The overarching goal of the specialized Udall Centers program is to establish a network of Centers that work collaboratively as well as independently to define the causes of and discover improved treatments for Parkinsons disease (PD). A more immediate goal for each Center is to rapidly advance synergistic, interdisciplinary research programs while serving as local resources and national leaders in PD research. The overall theme, proposed research projects, and associated cores must inform the etiology, pathogenesis or treatment of PD. Investigations on related synucleinopathies may be included, to the extent that these directly inform PD research.

Agency: Dept. of the Army -- USAMRAA

Program: USSOCOM Extramural Biomedical Research and Development Broad Agency Announcement Grant

Description: The USSOCOM seeks novel biomedical solutions to preserve the high level of performance and save the lives of Special Operations Forces (SOF) in field environments. Proposed projects must be unique to the requirements of SOF who typically conduct combat operations in austere, remote locations without timely access to medical evacuation or elevated levels of medical care. It is these far-forward and/or isolated operations that make SOF medicine unique and result in material solutions characterized by ruggedness, light weight, small volume, and low power requirements. USSOCOM is also interested in research that will lead to improved techniques and procedures that do not necessarily require new material. Information about USSOCOM is available at http://www.socom.mil/ This BAA is intended to solicit extramural research and development ideas, and is issued under the provisions of the Competition in Contracting Act of 1984 (Public Law 98-369), as implemented in Federal Acquisition Regulation 6.102(d)(2) and 35.016. This BAA provides a general description of USAMRMC’s research and development programs, including: research areas of interest; general information; evaluation and selection criteria; and proposal/application preparation instructions. Research and development funded through this BAA is intended and expected to benefit and inform both military and civilian medical practice and knowledge. In accordance with FAR 6.102, projects funded under this BAA must be for basic and applied research and that part of development not related to the development of a specific system or hardware procurement. Projects must be for scientific study and experimentation directed toward advancing the state-of-the-art or increasing knowledge or understanding rather than focusing on a specific system or hardware solution. This BAA is open for a limited time only. Before submitting full proposal/applications,organizations must submit pre-proposal/pre-applications according to instructions in the BAA and receive an invitation to submit a full proposal. This BAA contains several changes from the previous USSOCOM BAA: research areas of interest have been updated; instructions are provided for marking proprietary information if included in full proposals/applications; information and instructions regarding Conflicts of Interest have been added; in addition to current and pending support information, PIs and key personnel are required to provide prior (within the last 5 years) support information; areas addressing Representations and Certifications have changed; attachment entitled “Organizational Data” is added; attachment previously entitled “Certificate of Environmental Compliance” is changed to “Environmental Compliance Assurance”; attachment entitled “Facility Safety Plan Instructions” has been updated.
