Grant Opportunities

Deadline: 5/1/2013

Agency: Melanoma Research Foundation

Program: New Research Projects

Description:  The Melanoma Research Foundation is accepting applications from emerging and established scientific investigators for research projects that explore new avenues in melanoma biology, prevention and treatments, with the goal of finding a cure. The foundation makes grants in four areas: Career Development Awards, Established Investigator Awards, Career Investigator CURE OM Awards, and Established Investigator CURE OM Awards.

Career Development Awards provide funding of up to $50,000 a year for two years to junior investigators who are beginning a research career emphasizing melanoma-related projects and have not yet secured strong federal funding for their research.

Established Investigator Awards provide funding of up to $100,000 a year for two years to established melanoma researchers or senior researchers working in closely related fields who wish to move into melanoma research.

Career Development CURE OM Awards provide funding of up to $50,000 a year for two years to junior investigators in the ocular/uveal melanoma field.

Established Investigator CURE OM Awards provides funding of up to $100,000 a year for two years to established ocular/uveal melanoma researchers, or senior researchers.

Award Amount: Varies (see above)

Eligibility: To be eligible for Career Development Awards (including CURE OM), applicants must hold a Ph.D. or M.D. Applicants who are postdocs must have less than five years of postdoctoral experience and must not have previously received any major grant support. Applicants who are not postdocs may have the title of research associate or assistant professor, or the equivalent. In addition, applicants must show evidence of strong departmental or institutional support and commitment.

To be eligible for Established Investigator Award (including CURE OM), applicants must hold a Ph.D. or M.D., have a title equivalent to associate professor or higher, and show evidence of strong departmental or institutional support and commitment.

Program: Small-Business/ERC Collaborative Opportunity

Description:  This opportunity aims to facilitate the translation of NSF's technology investments in Engineering Research Centers (ERC) and in Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) projects into the market place. Furthermore, in instances where an ERC is funded with a mission to support the public good through the implementation of critical public engineering systems (the infrastructure), this includes facilitating implementations that realize the intended public benefit. The specific goals of this opportunity are to: Speed the translation of ERC-generated research and technology advances to the marketplace or its implementation into critical public engineered systems and engage undergraduate and graduate students more directly in the innovation process through collaboration between an ERC and a small business concern, (OPTION 1) and Strengthen the research capacity of active NSF SBIR/STTR Phase II awardees to speed the entry of their innovations into the marketplace and broaden its portfolio of marketable products through collaboration with an ERC (OPTION 2).

Award Amount: $200,000

Eligibility: Small business concern; Active or graduated, self-sustaining ERC; Active SBIR/STTR awardee

Deadline: 5/17/2013

Agency: Food & Drug Administration

Program: Collection of Dose Adjustment and Therapeutic Monitoring Data to Aid Narrow Therapeutic Index Drug Classification

Description:  Narrow therapeutic index (NTI) drugs are those drugs where small differences in dose or blood concentration may cause serious adverse events or therapeutic failure. In 2011, FDA proposed tighter quality and bioequivalence (BE) standards for NTI drugs. These new standards will further enhance the quality and therapeutic equivalence of generic NTI drugs. One challenge in implementing tighter quality and bioequivalence (BE) standards for NTI drugs is to identify drugs that can be classified as NTI drugs. It is believed that dose adjustment and therapeutic monitoring data in clinical practice can provide insight about the drug dose/concentration and response relationship which may help determine which drug falls into NTI category and may need tighter review criteria. The objective of this application is to collect drug dose adjustment and therapeutic monitoring data in patients to aid NTI classification. The outcome of this study can help FDA develop a NTI drug list and implement the NTI policy.

Award Amount: $250,000
