Weekly Grant Funding Opportunities

Please feel free to send special funding search requests any time (susan_craft@ncbiotech.org).  Please note that beginning July 1, 2013, grant funding requests will be rolled into our regular research and will include a fee of $100/hour. Also, let us know if any of your partners have submitted grant applications to funding announcements posted in the weekly grant alert emails.  We would love to hear of their successes!

Visit NCBiotech’s Funding Gateway page to get more information on funding announcements, links to opportunity search databases and grant development tips.

Announcements

According to NIH, “For the duration of the funding lapse, applicants are strongly encouraged not to submit paper or electronic grant applications to NIH during the period of the lapse… Grants.gov will be open and can accept electronic applications.  However, applications will not be processed by NIH until the eRA Systems are back on-line.”

Grant Opportunities

Deadline: 10/29/2013

Agency: National Science Foundation

Program: Nano-Biosensing

Description: The Nano-Biosensing Program supports fundamental research in engineering areas related to: Novel biorecognition elements; Multifunctional nanomaterials and interfaces for biosensing applications; Fundamental study of bio-macromolecules confinement and orientation at the micro- and nano-interfaces for biosensing applications; Nano-biosensors for basic biology applications (protein-protein interactions, cellular signaling and cross talk, as well as other similar topics)Integration of nano-biosensors into portable devices for medical applications. Proposals outside of these specific topics may also be accepted. Photonic nanosensors with medical applications should be submitted to the Biophotonics Program PE7236, while non-photonic nanosensors should be submitted to PE7909 (Nano-Biosensing). Areas of interest for PE7909 include non-photonic biological and biomedical topics, food safety, energy, environment, distributed sensing, and security. The Nano-Biosensing Program supports innovative, transformative, and insightful fundamental investigations of original technologies with broad long-term impact. The program also supports fundamental development of applications that require novel use of nano-scale bio-inspired engineering principles and approaches that will meet the engineering and technology needs of the nation. The program is targeting research in the area of the monitoring, identification and/or quantification of biological signals and is particularly interested in projects at the intersection of engineering, life sciences, and information technology.

Award Amount: $300,000 - 600,001

Deadline: 10/30/2013

Agency: Michael J. Fox Foundation

Program: Therapeutic Pipeline Program

Description: The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research (MJFF) seeks to stimulate development of Parkinson’s disease (PD) therapeutics with potential for fundamentally altering disease course and/or significantly improving treatment of symptoms above and beyond current standards of care. Part of our annual Edmond J. Safra Core Programs for PD Research, the Therapeutic Pipeline Program is open to industry and academic investigators working at either pre-clinical or clinical stages of drug and therapeutic development. Proposals must focus on a treatment strategy with clear potential for PD and have a well-defined plan for moving toward clinical utility for patients. Both novel approaches as well as repositioning of approved or clinically safe therapies from other non-PD indications are of interest.

Award Amount: Varies

Eligibility:  U.S. and non-U.S. biotechnology/pharmaceutical companies or other for-profit entities, either publicly or privately held; U.S. and non-U.S. entities, public and private non-profit entities, such as universities, colleges, hospitals, laboratories, units of state and local governments, and eligible agencies of the federal government. As therapeutic programs may require many kinds of expertise, MJFF encourages industry and academic collaborations when appropriate. Given the significant coordination and leadership necessary for this program, post-doctoral fellows are NOT eligible to apply as PIs.

Deadline: 11/1/2013

Agency: Burroughs Wellcome Foundation

Program: Investigators in the Pathogenesis of Infectious Disease

Description: Five-year awards provide $500,000 to support accomplished investigators at the assistant professor level to study pathogenesis, with a focus on the interplay between human and microbial biology, shedding light on how human and microbial systems are affected by their encounters. The awards are intended to give recipients the freedom and flexibility to pursue new avenues of inquiry and higher-risk research projects that hold potential for significantly advancing the biochemical, pharmacological, immunological, and molecular biological understanding of how microbes and the human body interact.

Award Amount: $500,000.00

Website: www.bwfund.org/grant-programs/infectious-diseases/investigators-pathogenesis-infectious-disease

Eligibility:  Candidates will generally have an M.D., D.V.M., or Ph.D. degree. (References to degrees include all types of medical and scientific doctoral level degrees.) BWF particularly encourages human health-relevant applications from veterinary scientists. Candidates must have an established record of independent research and hold a tenure-track position as an assistant professor or equivalent (at the time of application) at a degree-granting institution. Candidates must be nominated by accredited, degree-granting institutions in the United States or Canada.

Deadline: 11/6/2013

Agency: Prostate Cancer Foundation

Program: Movember - PCF Challenge Award 2013

Description: The Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF) is pleased to announce a new 2013 Movember-PCF Challenge Award Request for Applications related to immunotherapy for the treatment of advanced, metastatic prostate cancer. This Award will support one large-scale research project concerning metastatic prostate cancer over a duration of two years, providing up to a total of $1 million for one team. The Award will cover direct research costs only. The 2013 Movember-PCF Challenge Award will focus on funding translational and clinical science to advance immunotherapy. Areas of particular interest to PCF include but are not limited to: (1) adoptive engineered T cell therapy; (2) Checkpoint inhibition therapy; (3) Development of rational combination/sensitization immunotherapy regimens; (4) Characterization of biomarker(s) that predict response or innate resistance to immunotherapy; (5) Other novel first-in-field immunotherapy strategies with near term translational potential.

Award Amount: $1,000,000.00
