BASF Consolidates Divisions, Moves Business to RTP

BASF is merging several of its U.S. non-food divisions into a single entity and relocating the business from St. Louis to Research Triangle Park.

The move is expected to create approximately 30 jobs for the area.

The German conglomerate will reorganize Pest Control Solutions and Professional Turf & Ornamentals, Professional Vegetation Management and Market Business Development as the BASF Specialty Products Department (SPD).

While the business will operate as a single unit, the respective markets of the merging divisions will continue to be served, said Jan Buberl, who will head the Specialty Products Department.

“We are merging the businesses to stay ahead of the curve of the industries we serve,” said Buberl. “As the (Turf & Ornamentals) and Pest Control markets move closer together, this merger puts us in a position to better serve our customers.”

BASF has had a presence on the RTP campus since 1986. In 2012 the company announced plans for expansion, which included establishing its global Plant Science headquarters in the park.

“Having these businesses come together as one strengthens BASF and its commitment to the specialty markets,” said Nevin McDougall, senior vice president of BASF Crop Protection North America. “The new SPD unit will be built to last for the long term, while meeting the needs of customers in these markets.”

The company expects the new SPD business structure to be in place by March 31.
