$500K Awaits Your 'Ask'

There's a $500,000 grant out there for the taking, if you're an academic scientist or engineer seeking answers to biological questions.

The Burroughs Wellcome Fund is inviting pre-proposals from people who would like to nominate themselves for the annual Career Award at the Scientific Interface, designed "to bridge advanced postdoctoral training and the first three years of faculty service."

It's aimed at advancing the careers of physical, chemical or computational science researchers and engineers whose work addresses biological questions.

The pre-proposals must be submitted by Sept.1. The applications are open to U.S. and Canadian citizens or permanent residents as well as to U.S. temporary residents.

In previous years, candidates for this award had to be nominated by a North American degree-granting institution. This year, candidates may self-nominate.

Pre-proposals will be reviewed by the Interfaces in Science Advisory Committee, and selected candidates will be invited to submit a full application. Full invited applications will be submitted by Jan. 12, 2011.
