Dr. James T. McDeavitt oversees the medical education and research activities of Carolinas HealthCare System.

Today, Carolinas Medical Center is the only non-university teaching hospital designated as an Academic Medical Center in North Carolina. CMC is the Sponsoring Institution for 15 accredited specialty and subspecialty medical and dental residency programs with 210 full-time geographic medical and dental faculty and 211 residents and fellows.

Dr. McDeavitt’s responsibilities also include the Cannon Research Center, the medical center's Regional Education activities, Cancer Services/Ambulatory Care and the Carolinas College of Health Sciences.

The Carolinas College of Health Sciences was formed in 1996 and includes technical training programs in medical technology, radiological technology, surgical technology and the Medical Center's School of Nursing

Dr. McDeavitt received his undergraduate degree from Duke University and a doctorate in Medicine from Wake Forest University.
