The Biotech for Business Leaders series is designed to connect non-scientific, business and community leaders with the basics of regional biotechnology development:
- How these leaders fit into the biotechnology community
- How biotechnology relates to the long-term economic vitality of the southeastern region
The first event in the Biotech for Business Leaders series provided an overview of the requirements for regional biotechnology development. UNC-Wilmington Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo welcomed the attendees, with remarks on biotechnology development and innovation. Chancellor DePaolo is also the chairwoman of the Advisory Committee for Biotechnology in Southeastern North Carolina.
Gene Haley, CEO of Wilmington Pharmaceuticals, introduced Robert McMahan, Gov. Mike Easley's senior advisor for Science and Technology and executive director of the North Carolina Board of Science and Technology. McMahan gave the keynote address discussing "Biotech in North Carolina: The Result of an Innovation Driven Development Strategy."
